Compatibility

Tablets that support eSIM in 2026.

Tablet eSIM support only exists in models sold with cellular connectivity. Wi-Fi-only variants of the same tablet — even from the same generation — have no cellular modem and cannot use any SIM or eSIM. Always verify the “Wi-Fi + Cellular” or “5G” model before purchasing a plan.

To check an iPad: go to Settings > General > About. If a “Cellular Data” section appears, the tablet supports eSIM. For Samsung Galaxy Tab: go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks. If this option exists, cellular is supported.

Connectivity Options

Tablet eSIM vs phone hotspot for travel.

Direct tablet eSIM

  • Independent cellular connection
  • No phone battery drain
  • Works when phone is off or charging
  • More stable for all-day use
  • Additional cost: $5–$15 for a separate plan

Phone hotspot

  • Uses existing phone eSIM plan — no extra cost
  • Drains phone battery 2–3x faster
  • Connection drops when phone screen locks
  • Speed reduced through Wi-Fi relay
  • Phone must stay nearby

Remote workers using the tablet for video calls all day should install a dedicated tablet eSIM. The phone hotspot battery drain becomes unmanageable after 3 to 4 hours. A direct tablet eSIM also provides a more stable connection for sustained Zoom or Teams sessions.

Casual travelers who check email and maps occasionally should use the phone hotspot. The occasional data use does not justify the cost of a second eSIM plan.

Setup Guide

How to install a travel eSIM on iPad.

iPad uses “Cellular Data” instead of “Cellular” in Settings — a small but important difference from iPhone. The installation process takes under 3 minutes.

  1. 1

    Open Settings > Cellular Data

Tap Add eSIM. On older iPad models, this shows as Add a Data Plan.

  2. 2

    Choose Use QR Code

Your provider sends a QR code by email after purchase. Open that email on another device.

  3. 3

    Scan the QR code

Hold your iPad camera over the QR code. The activation code loads automatically.

  4. 4

    Label the plan

Name it with the destination country. This helps when you have multiple eSIM profiles stored.

  5. 5

    Test before departure

Install at home over Wi-Fi. Toggle the plan on briefly to confirm it appears correctly. Toggle off until you arrive.

iPad supports up to 8 stored eSIM profiles but only one active at a time. Delete unused profiles if you hit the limit: Settings > Cellular Data > select the plan > Delete eSIM.

For detailed installation steps across all devices, see the eSIM activation guide.

Plan Selection

Best travel eSIM plans for tablet use.

Tablet data needs are higher than phone data needs because tablets are used for longer sessions — video calls, document editing, streaming. Plan accordingly.

Airalo

Widest coverage

200+ countries. Data-only QR codes work on iPad. Best for multi-country trips.

Holafly

Unlimited daily data

No data cap per day. Best for video-heavy tablet users. Does not support hotspot.

Nomad

Budget data

Lowest per-GB cost in many destinations. Hotspot included. Best for casual browsing.

Remote Work

Remote work on a tablet abroad.

Many remote workers travel with an iPad Pro or Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra plus a keyboard instead of a laptop. The tablet eSIM provides the connectivity layer for this setup.

Video calls are the primary data consumer. iPad Pro at 1080p uses up to 2.5 GB per hour on Zoom. Three one-hour meetings per day consume 7.5 GB. A 5-day work week with daily video calls needs a minimum of 10 GB for calls alone, plus 1 to 2 GB for email, documents, and browsing. Budget 15 GB total for a 5-day remote work trip.

Disable automatic cloud backup over cellular. iCloud Photos on a travel day with 200 photos can upload 500 MB to 2 GB before you notice. Set iCloud Photos to Wi-Fi only: Settings > Photos > Mobile Data > toggle off. The same applies to Google Photos on Android tablets.

Document editing (Google Docs, Pages, Office 365) uses minimal data — under 50 MB per day for typical office work without large file downloads. Save large file transfers for hotel Wi-Fi.

For full remote work data guidance, see the eSIM for remote work guide.

Important Limits

Tablet eSIM limitations.

Tablet eSIM plans are data-only. No phone number is assigned. Traditional phone calls and SMS do not work. All voice and video communication happens through apps: WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, Google Meet. These work identically to a phone plan for communication quality.

Wi-Fi-only tablets cannot use eSIM. There is no workaround. If your iPad, Galaxy Tab, or Surface does not show a Cellular or Mobile Networks section in Settings, it has no modem. Verify the model before purchasing a plan.

Carrier-locked tablets present a separate issue. Tablets purchased directly from a carrier (e.g., through Verizon or AT&T) may be locked to that carrier's network. A carrier lock blocks third-party eSIM profiles. Check Settings for a carrier lock status indicator, or contact the original carrier before installing a travel eSIM.

Quick compatibility checklist

  • Model is a Cellular / Wi-Fi + Cellular variant
  • Settings shows Cellular Data or Mobile Networks
  • Tablet is not carrier-locked (or lock has been removed)
  • Wi-Fi-only model — cannot use eSIM
  • Carrier-locked tablet — third-party eSIM blocked

FAQ

Tablet eSIM questions answered.

Can I put a travel eSIM in my iPad?

Yes, if your iPad is a Wi-Fi + Cellular model. Supported models: iPad Pro 3rd gen (2018) or later, iPad Air 3rd gen (2019) or later, iPad Mini 5th gen (2019) or later, iPad 7th gen (2019) or later. Wi-Fi-only iPads do not support eSIM. Check Settings > General > About for a Cellular Data section to confirm.

Is a tablet eSIM better than using my phone as a hotspot?

For all-day tablet use (remote work, video calls), a dedicated tablet eSIM provides a more stable connection and avoids draining your phone battery 2–3x faster. For occasional tablet checks, phone hotspot works fine and avoids the cost of a second eSIM plan.

Can I make phone calls on a tablet with eSIM?

Not traditional phone calls. Tablet eSIM plans are data-only — no phone number, no SMS. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Zoom, or Google Meet for voice and video calls over data. These work identically to cellular calls in terms of quality and use your eSIM data allowance.

Does iPad support travel eSIM from Airalo or Holafly?

Yes. Cellular iPad models accept eSIM profiles from Airalo, Holafly, Saily, and Nomad. The installation process: Settings > Cellular Data > Add eSIM > scan the QR code from your provider. The process is identical to iPhone installation.

How much data does a tablet use while traveling?

Light use (email, maps, browsing) uses 500 MB to 1 GB per day. Remote work with video calls uses 2–4 GB per day. Streaming video uses 1–3 GB per hour. For a 7-day trip with moderate use, a 5–10 GB plan covers most travelers.
