- iPhone & Android
- Under 5 minutes
- No tools needed
- Updated June 2026
Step by Step
Activate your eSIM in 5 steps.
- 1
Check your phone supports eSIM
Open Settings on your phone. On iPhone: Settings > General > About. Look for 'Available SIM' or 'eSIM'. On Android: Settings > Network > SIM cards. If you see an option to add an eSIM, your phone supports it. Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked. Contact your home carrier if unsure.
- 2
Buy your plan and connect to WiFi
Purchase a prepaid eSIM plan from Airalo, Holafly, Saily, or Nomad for your destination. You receive a QR code by email within 60 seconds. Connect to WiFi before scanning. Home WiFi is ideal. Airport WiFi works too.
- 3
Scan the QR code
On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. Point your camera at the QR code from your provider email. On Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add eSIM > Scan QR code. The profile downloads in about 30 seconds.
- 4
Set it as your data line
After the profile installs, your phone asks which line to use for cellular data. Choose the new travel eSIM for data. Keep your home SIM as the default for calls and texts. Label the new line 'Travel' for easy identification.
- 5
Turn on data roaming for the eSIM
On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > [Travel line] > Data Roaming > On. On Android: Settings > Network > SIMs > [Travel line] > Roaming > On. Enable roaming for the travel line only. Keep it off for your home line. Your eSIM connects automatically when you land.
Troubleshooting
Common errors and fixes.
"Unable to activate eSIM" or "eSIM not supported"
Your phone may be carrier-locked. Contact your home carrier to request an unlock. This is free in most countries after your contract period ends.
QR code does not scan
Increase the screen brightness on the device displaying the QR code. Clean your camera lens. Try zooming in slightly. If scanning still fails, enter the activation code manually from your provider email.
No data connection after landing
Check that data roaming is enabled for the travel eSIM line specifically. Restart your phone. If the issue persists, toggle airplane mode on and off to force a network re-scan.
"No service" message
Go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection and switch from Automatic to Manual. Select the carrier listed by your eSIM provider. Switch back to Automatic after connecting.
Accidentally deleted the eSIM
Contact your provider support immediately. Most providers can issue a replacement QR code. Some allow one free re-download. Do not delete the profile unless absolutely necessary.

FAQ
eSIM activation questions.
How long does it take to activate an eSIM?
Under 5 minutes from purchase to connected. Scanning the QR code and installing the profile takes about 90 seconds. The rest is choosing the right settings.
Do I need WiFi to install an eSIM?
Yes. You need an internet connection to download the eSIM profile. Install over WiFi at home or at your hotel before you leave. Airport WiFi also works.
Can I install the eSIM before my trip?
Yes, and you should. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi, keep data roaming off for the travel line, and enable it when you land. The plan clock does not start until you activate roaming.
What if the QR code does not scan?
Try increasing screen brightness on the device showing the QR code. Clean your camera lens. If scanning still fails, most providers offer a manual activation code you can type into Settings instead.
Will my phone number change?
No. Your home SIM stays active for calls and texts. The eSIM adds a second line for data only. Both lines work at the same time.
Which phones support eSIM?
Every iPhone from the XR (2018) onward, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and most 2022+ Android flagship phones. Your phone must also be carrier-unlocked.
Can I delete and reinstall an eSIM?
You can delete an eSIM profile, but reinstalling it requires a new QR code from your provider. Some providers allow one re-download. Contact support before deleting.
What does 'data roaming' mean for an eSIM?
Data roaming is a phone toggle that lets a travel eSIM connect to a foreign network. Enable it for the travel eSIM line only. Keep it off for your home line to avoid charges.
