Compatibility Check
How to check if your phone supports eSIM
Three methods to verify eSIM compatibility before buying a travel plan.
Method 1: Check phone settings
iPhone:Go to Settings, then General, then About. Scroll down and look for "Available SIM" or an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number. If you see an EID, your iPhone supports eSIM.
Android:Go to Settings, then Connections (or Network & Internet), then SIM Manager (or SIM cards). If you see an option labeled "Add eSIM" or "Download SIM", your phone supports eSIM.
Method 2: Dial *#06#
Open your phone dialer and type *#06#. This displays your device identifiers. If an EID number appears alongside IMEI numbers, your phone has eSIM hardware. No EID means no eSIM support.
Method 3: Check the manufacturer website
Visit the official specs page for your phone model on the manufacturer's website (apple.com, samsung.com, etc.). Look for "eSIM" or "Nano-SIM + eSIM" under the connectivity or SIM specifications section. Note that some regional variants of the same phone model may not include eSIM.
Unlock Check
How to check if your phone is carrier-unlocked
A carrier-locked phone will reject travel eSIM profiles. Verify before you buy.
iPhone unlock check
Go to Settings, then General, then About. Scroll to "Carrier Lock" or "Network Provider Lock". If it says "No SIM restrictions", your iPhone is unlocked. If it says "SIM locked", contact your carrier to request an unlock. Most US carriers process unlock requests in 24-72 hours for phones that are fully paid off.
Android unlock check
Insert a SIM card from a different carrier than the one that sold you the phone. If the phone connects and makes a call, it is unlocked. Alternatively, go to Settings, then Connections, then Mobile networks. Some Android phones show lock status here. If your phone is locked, contact your carrier with your IMEI number to request an unlock.
Bought directly from the manufacturer?
Phones purchased directly from Apple, Samsung, Google, or any manufacturer website are typically sold carrier-unlocked. These phones are ready for travel eSIM use out of the box. Phones purchased through a carrier (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Vodafone, etc.) may be locked until your device payment plan is complete.
FAQ
eSIM compatibility questions
How do I check if my phone supports eSIM?
On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then About, and look for an Available SIM slot or EID number. On Android, go to Settings, then Connections or Network, then SIM Manager. If you see an option to add an eSIM, your phone supports it. You can also dial *#06# to see if an EID number appears.
Does my phone need to be unlocked for eSIM?
Yes. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked to use a travel eSIM from a third-party provider. A carrier-locked phone will reject foreign eSIM profiles. Contact your current carrier to confirm unlock status or request an unlock before your trip.
Can I use eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?
Yes. Most eSIM-compatible phones support dual SIM: one physical SIM and one eSIM active at the same time. Keep your home SIM for calls and texts, use the travel eSIM for data abroad. Some newer iPhones support two active eSIM profiles without any physical SIM.
How many eSIM profiles can my phone store?
Most modern iPhones store 8 or more eSIM profiles. Android phones vary by manufacturer but typically support 5-8 stored profiles. You can only have one or two active at a time, but stored profiles can be swapped without reinstalling.
Will eSIM work on a refurbished phone?
Yes, if the phone model supports eSIM and it is carrier-unlocked. Refurbished phones retain their eSIM hardware. The risk with refurbished phones is carrier lock status: confirm the phone is unlocked before purchasing a travel eSIM.
Do all carriers sell eSIM-compatible phones?
Most major carriers sell eSIM-compatible phones, but some carrier-specific models disable eSIM until unlocked. Phones purchased directly from manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, or Google are the safest bet for guaranteed eSIM support.
