Quick answer

Data usage by traveler type.

Find your usage profile below. These estimates assume you use WiFi at your accommodation each evening and do not stream video over cellular.

Light

300–500 MB

Activities: Maps, messaging, email

Sightseers who use hotel WiFi for streaming

Moderate

1–2 GB

Activities: Social media, browsing, video calls (occasional)

Most leisure travelers

Heavy

2–3 GB

Activities: Regular video calls, Instagram Stories, YouTube

Content creators, frequent communicators

Remote work

3–5 GB

Activities: Cloud apps, video meetings, file uploads

Digital nomads, business travelers

By activity

Data usage per app and activity.

These figures are measured averages. Actual usage varies by app version, video quality settings, and network conditions.

ActivityData usage
Google Maps (navigation)5–10 MB/hr
WhatsApp / iMessage text1–5 MB/hr
WhatsApp voice call3–5 MB/min
Instagram (scrolling)150–300 MB/hr
TikTok (scrolling)500 MB–1 GB/hr
Video call (FaceTime/Zoom)500 MB–1.5 GB/hr

Calculator

How to calculate your plan size.

Use this three-step method to arrive at a number before you browse plans.

Step 1: Start with your daily estimate

Pick your usage tier from the table above. Use the midpoint of the range. Light user: 400 MB/day. Moderate: 1.5 GB/day. Heavy: 2.5 GB/day. Remote work: 4 GB/day.

Step 2: Multiply by trip length

TripLight (400 MB/day)Moderate (1.5 GB/day)Heavy (2.5 GB/day)
3 days1.2 GB4.5 GB7.5 GB
7 days2.8 GB10.5 GB17.5 GB
14 days5.6 GB21 GB35 GB

Step 3: Apply a WiFi offset

If your accommodation has reliable WiFi, reduce your total by 30–40%. Hotel WiFi handles evening streaming, morning email, and video calls, which are the heaviest data activities. If WiFi is unreliable or you are camping or on a road trip, use the full figure with no reduction.

Then round up to the next available plan size. Never round down.

Plan guide

What each plan size covers.

1 GB

1–2 day weekend trip with reliable hotel WiFi

Covers: Maps, messaging, and 30 minutes of browsing per day

Avoid if: Any trip longer than 2 days without consistent WiFi access

3 GB

3–5 day trip for a moderate user

Covers: Full navigation, social media browsing, and occasional video calls

Avoid if: Remote work trips or destinations with patchy WiFi

5 GB

7-day trip for most leisure travelers

Covers: Daily maps, social media, messaging, and some video calls

Avoid if: Daily streaming or full-time remote work

10 GB

10–14 day trip or heavy user on a 7-day trip

Covers: Video calls, regular Instagram use, and some YouTube

Avoid if: Long-stay remote workers who need more than 1 GB/day consistently

Unlimited

Remote workers, long stays, or travelers who stream daily

Covers: Everything — subject to daily fair-use throttle (usually 1–2 GB/day at full speed)

Avoid if: Short trips under 7 days where a fixed plan is cheaper per GB

Save data

Tips to use less data on your trip.

Download offline maps

Google Maps and Apple Maps let you download a country or city map before you leave. Navigation uses zero data once the map is cached.

Enable data saver mode

iPhone: Settings > Cellular > [travel line] > Low Data Mode. Android: Settings > Network > Data Saver. Reduces background app data by 50–70%.

Use WiFi calling

Enable WiFi calling on your home SIM line for calls and texts over hotel WiFi. This removes voice traffic from your travel eSIM data allowance entirely.

Download before you fly

Spotify playlists, Netflix downloads, and Kindle books take zero travel data when loaded at home. Fill your device before boarding.

Lower video quality

Switch YouTube to 360p and Zoom to 360p video. This cuts video call data use by 60–70% with almost no visible quality loss on a phone screen.

Turn off background app refresh

iPhone: Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Off. Android: Settings > Apps > [App] > Battery > Restricted. Stops apps from quietly consuming data in the background.

FAQ

Data planning questions.

Is 1 GB enough for a week abroad?

Only if you use WiFi most of the time. 1 GB covers about 2 days of light use: messaging, maps, and quick browsing. For a 7-day trip with regular phone use, a 3 GB or 5 GB plan is a safer choice.

Does an eSIM data plan expire?

Yes. Most plans have a validity window of 7, 15, or 30 days from the date of first activation, not from purchase. Some providers start the clock on installation. Check your plan terms before you buy.

Should I buy unlimited or a fixed data plan?

Fixed plans are usually better value for trips under 14 days. Unlimited plans make sense for remote work travel or long stays where you stream video daily. Unlimited plans often throttle speeds after 1-2 GB per day.

What happens when I run out of data?

Depending on your provider and plan, your connection either stops completely or throttles to a very slow speed (usually 128-256 kbps). Most providers let you top up additional data through their app without reinstalling the eSIM.

How can I monitor my data usage while traveling?

iPhone: Settings > Cellular > [travel eSIM line] shows data used. Android: Settings > Network > SIMs > Data usage. Most eSIM provider apps also show real-time usage. Reset the counter at the start of your trip for an accurate reading.
