Requirements

Minimum speed and data requirements for remote work.

Remote work tools have specific bandwidth requirements. Falling below these thresholds causes dropped video calls, slow file syncs, and frustrating lag in cloud applications. An eSIM on a 4G LTE network delivers 10-50 Mbps in most urban areas, which exceeds every requirement below.

Video calls (Zoom/Teams)

3-5 Mbps for HD video. 1.5 Mbps for audio only. ~1 GB per hour of video.

Cloud apps (Google, Office 365)

2-5 Mbps. Document editing uses minimal bandwidth. Large file uploads need 5+ Mbps.

Slack / messaging

Under 1 Mbps. Uses 50-100 MB per day. Always works on any LTE connection.

File transfers

5-10 Mbps for reasonable upload times. A 100 MB file takes 80 seconds at 10 Mbps.

Laptop Connectivity

Hotspot tethering for your laptop.

Most remote workers need a laptop connection, not just phone data. Hotspot tethering shares your phone's eSIM connection with your laptop via WiFi, Bluetooth, or USB cable.

Airalo, Saily, and Nomad all support hotspot tethering on their plans. Your phone and laptop share the same data pool. A full workday of laptop use over hotspot typically consumes 1-3 GB, depending on your tasks.

Holafly does not support hotspot on most plans. If laptop connectivity is a requirement, Holafly is not the right choice despite its unlimited data. Use Airalo or Saily instead and supplement with local WiFi for heavy downloads.

USB tethering provides the fastest and most stable connection between phone and laptop. WiFi hotspot is more convenient but drains phone battery faster. Carry a USB-C cable for important meetings and presentations.

Security

VPN performance over eSIM connections.

Many companies require VPN access for remote work. A VPN encrypts all traffic between your device and the company network. Running a VPN over an eSIM connection is standard practice, but there are performance considerations.

VPN adds 10-20% overhead to your connection speed. A 30 Mbps LTE connection drops to 24-27 Mbps with VPN active. This is still well above the 5 Mbps threshold for HD video calls. You will not notice the difference for everyday work tasks.

Saily includes NordVPN at no extra cost. This eliminates the need for a separate VPN subscription ($3-$5 per month) and uses optimized servers that minimize overhead. For workers whose companies do not provide a corporate VPN, Saily's built-in VPN is a practical alternative.

If your company provides a corporate VPN (Cisco AnyConnect, GlobalProtect, etc.), it works over any eSIM connection. No special configuration is needed. The VPN client does not care whether the underlying connection is cellular, WiFi, or wired.

Cost Analysis

Monthly eSIM cost by destination.

Costs assume 20 GB per month of moderate remote work usage. Prices reflect the cheapest available plan from any of the four providers.

Reliability

WiFi backup strategy for remote workers.

An eSIM should be your backup, not your primary connection. Coworking spaces, cafes, and accommodation WiFi handle the bulk of your daily data. The eSIM activates when WiFi is unavailable or unreliable.

The practical setup: use accommodation or coworking WiFi for morning deep work. Switch to eSIM hotspot when you move to a cafe or outdoor location in the afternoon. Return to WiFi in the evening. This hybrid approach keeps monthly eSIM usage under 10-15 GB.

For critical meetings, have both connections ready. Start the call on WiFi. If the connection drops, your phone automatically fails over to cellular. On iPhone, enable WiFi Assist (Settings > Cellular > WiFi Assist). On Android, enable adaptive connectivity or mobile data always active.

Destination Guide

Best destinations for remote work with eSIM.

Bangkok, Thailand

30-80 Mbps LTE

$22-$35/month (20 GB)

Fast AIS and DTAC networks. Coworking spaces everywhere. Low cost of living. Time zone works for APAC and late-night US meetings.

Lisbon, Portugal

20-60 Mbps LTE

$35-$50/month (20 GB)

Strong NOS and MEO networks. Growing digital nomad community. EU time zone suits European and East Coast US teams.

Mexico City, Mexico

15-40 Mbps LTE

$25-$40/month (20 GB)

Telcel network covers the city well. Central time zone aligns with US business hours. Affordable living costs.

Bali, Indonesia

10-30 Mbps LTE

$20-$30/month (20 GB)

Telkomsel provides coverage across the island. Slower than other destinations but sufficient for text-based work. Excellent value.

Barcelona, Spain

25-70 Mbps LTE

$35-$50/month (20 GB)

Orange and Vodafone networks. Strong 5G availability in the city center. EU time zone. Digital nomad visa available.

Practical Tips

Managing video meetings on cellular data.

Video meetings are the biggest data consumer for remote workers. A 1-hour Zoom call uses roughly 1 GB on HD video settings. Three daily meetings consume 3 GB, which adds up to 60 GB per month on a 5-day work week.

Reduce this by 60% by switching to 720p or audio-only when video is not essential. A 720p call uses 400-500 MB per hour. Audio-only uses 50-75 MB per hour. Most meetings do not require HD video — suggest camera-off for internal standups.

Turn off virtual backgrounds. They increase CPU load and bandwidth consumption. Close browser tabs and background apps during calls. Disable cloud sync (iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox) during meetings to prevent bandwidth competition.

FAQ

Remote work eSIM questions.

Can I work remotely using only an eSIM for internet?

Yes, if your work involves email, messaging, document editing, and occasional video calls. A 4G LTE connection at 10-30 Mbps handles all of these. If your work requires uploading large files or sustained video streaming, supplement the eSIM with local WiFi for heavy tasks.

How much data does remote work use per month?

Text-based work (email, Slack, documents) uses 3-5 GB per month. Adding 2-3 hours of daily video calls increases this to 15-25 GB. If you stream music while working, add another 2-3 GB. Plan for 20-30 GB per month for a full remote work setup on cellular.

Does VPN slow down an eSIM connection?

Yes, slightly. A VPN adds 10-20% overhead due to encryption and routing through a remote server. On a 30 Mbps LTE connection, expect 24-27 Mbps with VPN active. This is still fast enough for video calls and cloud applications. Saily's built-in VPN minimizes this overhead because it uses NordVPN's optimized servers.

Can I use my eSIM as a hotspot for my laptop?

Airalo, Saily, and Nomad allow hotspot tethering. Holafly does not support hotspot on most plans. When tethering, your laptop and phone share the same data pool. A day of laptop work over hotspot uses 1-3 GB depending on your tasks.

Which countries are best for remote work with eSIM connectivity?

Thailand (Bangkok, Chiang Mai), Portugal (Lisbon), Spain (Barcelona), Mexico (Mexico City, Playa del Carmen), and Indonesia (Bali) combine strong LTE coverage with low cost of living. All five have reliable eSIM support from multiple providers at $2-$4 per GB.
