The Full Plan

Your pre-trip eSIM checklist.

1Check your phone is eSIM compatible
2Verify your phone is carrier-unlocked
3Estimate your data needs
4Choose your destination plan
5Compare providers
6Purchase and install your eSIM
7Set up dual SIM before you leave

Each step below is a self-contained summary with a link to the full guide. Complete steps 1 and 2 first — if your phone fails either check, a travel eSIM will not work regardless of which provider you choose.

Step by Step

Complete your eSIM setup in order.

  1. 1

Check your phone is eSIM compatible

Your phone needs eSIM hardware before anything else. Most iPhones from the XR (2018) onward and Android flagships released after 2020 support eSIM. To confirm, open Settings and look for an option to add an eSIM under Cellular or SIM Manager. Budget Android phones and phones older than 2019 often lack eSIM support. Check the full model list before you buy a plan.

    Verify your phone is carrier-unlocked

An eSIM-compatible phone still cannot use a travel eSIM if it is carrier-locked. A carrier-locked phone only works with SIMs from the carrier you bought it from. Contact your home carrier to request an unlock — most carriers do this for free after your contract ends. Unlocking can take 1 to 10 business days, so start early. Phones purchased directly from manufacturers (Apple Store, Samsung online) are usually unlocked already.

    Estimate your data needs

Buying too little data cuts your trip short. Buying too much wastes money. A useful baseline: maps and messaging use about 50 MB per day, social media browsing uses 150 MB, and one hour of video streaming uses 500 MB to 1 GB. Most travelers manage well on 1 GB per day. Add a 20 percent buffer to your estimate and round up to the next available plan size. If you work remotely or plan to video call often, double the estimate.

    Choose your destination plan

Search for your destination country to see available plans, prices per GB, and plan durations. Regional plans cover multiple countries on a single plan — useful if your trip crosses borders. Single-country plans are usually cheaper per GB when you stay in one country. Check that the plan duration covers your full trip, including any layovers or buffer days on either end.

    Compare providers

Four providers cover most destinations reliably: Airalo offers the widest country selection and transparent per-GB pricing. Holafly offers unlimited data plans with no speed throttling on most destinations. Saily combines competitive pricing with a clean app experience. Nomad offers strong regional plans for multi-country trips. Check coverage maps, app ratings, and refund policies before buying. Support quality varies significantly between providers.

    Purchase and install your eSIM

Buy the plan at least 24 hours before departure. You receive a QR code by email within 60 seconds of purchase. Install it over home WiFi using your phone's eSIM settings. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code. On Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add eSIM. The download takes about 30 seconds. Keep data roaming turned off on the travel line until you land — the plan clock starts when you connect to a local network.

Set up dual SIM before you leave

Running two SIMs at once keeps your home number active for calls and texts while the travel eSIM handles data. Set your home SIM as the default for calls and texts. Set the travel eSIM as the default for cellular data. Label both lines clearly in your phone settings so you can tell them apart. Test the configuration at home by enabling data roaming on the travel line and loading a webpage. Disable data roaming again before departure.

If Something Goes Wrong

What to do when your eSIM does not work.

Most eSIM problems fall into four categories: the phone is carrier-locked, the QR code did not scan correctly, data roaming is not enabled on the right line, or the phone is not connecting to the right network at the destination.

The troubleshooting guide covers all four issues with step-by-step fixes for iPhone and Android. It also covers the "No Service" error, manual network selection, and what to do if the eSIM profile disappears from settings.

FAQ

eSIM travel planning questions.

How far in advance should I buy a travel eSIM?

Buy your eSIM at least 24 hours before departure so you have time to install it over home WiFi and troubleshoot any issues. You can purchase weeks in advance — the plan clock does not start until you enable data roaming at your destination.

Do I need WiFi to set up my eSIM before a trip?

Yes. You need an internet connection to download the eSIM profile. Install over home WiFi before you leave. Airport WiFi works too, but home installation is more reliable and gives you time to fix problems.

What if my phone is carrier-locked?

A carrier-locked phone cannot use a travel eSIM. Contact your home carrier to request an unlock. Most carriers unlock phones for free after the contract period ends. Unlocking can take 1 to 10 business days depending on the carrier.

Can I use the same eSIM for multiple countries?

Regional eSIM plans cover multiple countries on a single plan. Airalo, Saily, and Nomad all offer regional plans for Europe, Asia, and other regions. Holafly focuses on single-country unlimited plans. A regional plan is usually cheaper than buying separate country plans.

What happens if I run out of data mid-trip?

Most providers let you purchase a top-up or a new plan from the app. Airalo, Saily, and Nomad all support in-app top-ups. Holafly's unlimited plans do not expire by data, so running out is not a concern if you choose that plan type.
