iPhone
Check eSIM data usage on iPhone.
iPhone tracks cellular data usage per SIM profile. The counter shows total data consumed since the last manual reset. This works on all iPhone models from the XR onward.
- 1
Open Settings and tap Cellular
From the home screen, open Settings. Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions). You see a list of all active SIM and eSIM profiles.
- 2
Select your eSIM plan
Tap the name of your travel eSIM. It is usually labeled with the provider name or your destination country. The plan detail screen opens.
- 3
Scroll to see data usage
Scroll down to see 'Current Period' data usage. This shows total bytes consumed. Below that, individual app usage is listed. To reset the counter, scroll to the bottom and tap 'Reset Statistics.'
Important: iPhone does not automatically reset the counter when you install a new eSIM. Reset it manually after activating your travel plan to get an accurate reading for your trip.
Samsung Galaxy
Check eSIM data usage on Samsung Galaxy.
Samsung Galaxy phones running One UI 3.0 or later show per-SIM data usage through the Data Usage screen. This applies to all Galaxy S20 through S25 and Z Fold/Flip series.
- 1
Open Settings and tap Connections
Open Settings from the app drawer or notification shade. Tap Connections near the top of the list.
- 2
Tap Data usage
Inside Connections, tap Data usage. If you have multiple SIMs, select the eSIM profile from the SIM selector at the top of the screen.
- 3
View your usage chart and app breakdown
The data usage screen shows a chart of daily consumption and a per-app breakdown below. The billing cycle dates can be adjusted to match your eSIM plan start date for accurate tracking.
Samsung also lets you set a data usage warning and limit. Go to Data usage > Data warning and limit. Set the warning to 80% of your plan allowance to get a notification before you run out.
Google Pixel
Check eSIM data usage on Google Pixel.
Pixel phones running Android 12 or later show per-SIM data usage through the Network settings. The steps below apply to Pixel 3 through Pixel 9 series.
- 1
Open Settings and tap Network & internet
Open Settings on your Pixel. Tap Network & internet at the top of the list.
- 2
Tap SIMs, then select your eSIM
Tap SIMs to see all profiles. Select your travel eSIM from the list. The plan detail screen opens.
- 3
Tap App data usage
On the SIM detail screen, tap App data usage. A chart shows daily consumption over the current cycle. Below the chart, each app's data usage is listed from highest to lowest.
Pixel phones include a built-in data warning feature. Set it under Network > SIMs > your eSIM > Data warning & limit. Set the warning threshold to 80% of your plan.
Most Accurate
Check data usage in your provider app.
Your phone's built-in counter tracks all data leaving the device. Your provider tracks only data passing through their network. The provider number is the one that determines when your plan runs out. Always check the provider app for your true remaining balance.
Alerts
Set up data usage alerts.
Android phones (Samsung and Pixel) have built-in data warning features. Set the warning threshold to 80% of your eSIM plan allowance. Your phone sends a notification when you hit it, giving you time to conserve or top up.
iPhone does not include a built-in data warning. Two workarounds: (1) check your provider app daily — it shows remaining data in real time. (2) Install a third-party data monitor like My Data Manager or Data Usage Pro, which can track per-SIM usage and send alerts.
The simplest approach on any phone: set a daily calendar reminder to check your usage at lunchtime. A 5-second glance at the provider app prevents surprise data exhaustion.
Common Confusion
Why phone and provider show different numbers.
Your phone counts every byte that leaves the cellular radio, including retransmissions and protocol overhead. Your provider counts only the payload data that reaches their servers. The difference is typically 5-15%.
Additional factors that inflate the phone counter: iOS and Android system updates downloaded on cellular, background app refresh, cloud photo sync, and location services pings. Disable background app refresh for non-essential apps to keep the phone counter closer to the provider reading.
The provider app is always the authoritative source. If your phone says you have used 4.2 GB and Airalo says 3.8 GB, you have 3.8 GB of actual plan consumption. The remaining 0.4 GB was overhead that does not count against your plan.
Conservation
What to do when running low on data.
Connect to WiFi whenever possible
Hotels, cafes, airports, and restaurants offer free WiFi in most countries. Use WiFi for streaming, updates, and large downloads. Save cellular for maps and messaging while walking.
Disable background app refresh
On iPhone: Settings > General > Background App Refresh > turn off for all non-essential apps. On Android: Settings > Apps > select app > Battery > restrict background usage.
Download offline maps before going out
Google Maps and Maps.me support offline maps. Download the city map for each destination over WiFi. Navigation works without any data connection. This alone can save 200-500 MB per week.
Top up through your provider app
Airalo and Saily allow in-app top-ups on the same eSIM profile. No new QR code needed. Holafly lets you extend plan duration. Nomad requires buying a new plan.
Lower streaming quality
Set Spotify to 'Normal' quality (96 kbps) instead of 'Very High' (320 kbps). Set YouTube to 480p instead of 1080p. These changes reduce streaming data by 60-80%.
FAQ
eSIM data usage questions.
Why does my phone show different data usage than my eSIM provider app?
Your phone counts all data that leaves the device, including system updates, background app refresh, and iCloud sync. Your provider counts only data that passes through their network. The difference is usually 5-15% and comes from data routed through WiFi that the phone attributes to cellular.
Does checking data usage in Settings use data?
No. The data usage screen in your phone's Settings reads from a local counter stored on the device. It does not make a network request. Checking the provider app does use a small amount of data, typically under 1 MB per check.
Can I set a data usage warning on my phone?
On Android, yes. Go to Settings, Network, Data usage, and set a warning threshold. Your phone will notify you when you reach it. On iPhone, there is no built-in warning. Use your provider's app or a third-party data monitor like Data Usage or My Data Manager.
How much data does Google Maps use per hour?
Google Maps uses approximately 5-10 MB per hour of active navigation. Downloading offline maps for your destination before your trip reduces this to near zero. One offline city map download uses 50-200 MB depending on the area size.
What should I do if I am running low on eSIM data mid-trip?
First, connect to WiFi whenever available to conserve cellular data. Second, disable background app refresh in Settings. Third, buy a top-up through your provider's app — Airalo and Saily support in-app top-ups on the same profile. If your provider does not support top-ups, buy and install a new plan.
