Google Fi

Google Fi pricing for international travel.

Google Fi offers three plans. Each handles international data differently. The cost difference is significant and determines whether Fi makes sense for your travel pattern.

Flexible ($20/month base)

Pay $10/GB for data used in the US or internationally. Data costs are capped at $60 (6 GB), after which speeds slow to 256 kbps. A 5 GB international trip costs $70 total ($20 base + $50 data). This is the most expensive option per GB.

Simply Unlimited ($30/month)

Includes unlimited US data but limits international data to 2G speeds (128 kbps). This is too slow for maps, messaging, or any practical use abroad. Not recommended for travelers.

Unlimited Plus ($65/month)

Includes full-speed international data up to your plan's high-speed allowance (50 GB). After that, speeds slow to 256 kbps. This is the best Fi plan for travelers, but the $65/month base cost runs whether you travel or not.

Prepaid eSIM

Prepaid eSIM pricing for the same destinations.

Prepaid travel eSIMs charge per plan, not per month. You buy data for a specific trip and pay nothing when you are home. There is no base fee, no subscription, and no automatic billing.

Coverage

Coverage and speed differences.

Google Fi uses T-Mobile domestically and partners with local carriers abroad. International speeds vary by country and carrier partnership. In major cities, Fi typically delivers 10-30 Mbps on LTE.

Prepaid eSIM providers also partner with local carriers. Airalo connects to top-tier networks in most countries (Orange in France, Telekom in Germany, AIS in Thailand). Speeds range from 15-50 Mbps on LTE, sometimes faster than Fi because eSIM providers can choose the best local partner for each market.

Both cover 200+ countries. For popular tourist destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, coverage is effectively identical. The difference appears in less-visited markets where Google Fi may have weaker carrier partnerships compared to Airalo's destination-specific agreements.

Throttling

Data throttling comparison.

Google Fi's Simply Unlimited plan throttles international data to 2G speeds (128 kbps). At that speed, loading a single web page takes 30+ seconds. Maps barely function. This makes the cheapest Fi plan useless for international travel.

The Unlimited Plus plan provides full-speed data up to your monthly cap, then slows to 256 kbps. The Flexible plan has no throttle but caps per-GB costs at 6 GB ($60 in data charges).

Prepaid eSIMs do not throttle. They provide full-speed data up to your plan limit, then stop entirely. Holafly's unlimited plans are the exception — they reduce speed to 1 Mbps after 5 GB per day, which is still faster than Fi's 256 kbps throttle.

Google Fi Wins

When Google Fi makes more sense.

Google Fi is the better choice in a few specific scenarios. Outside these, a prepaid eSIM saves money on every trip.

  • You take one short trip per year (3-5 days): the convenience of automatic international coverage may be worth the $20-$30 premium over buying an eSIM for a single short trip.
  • You need a US phone number abroad: Google Fi keeps your US number active internationally. Prepaid eSIMs are data-only — you lose the ability to receive SMS-based two-factor codes on the eSIM line.
  • You visit many countries in rapid succession: Fi switches carriers automatically at every border. Buying individual eSIM plans for a 10-country trip takes more planning, though regional eSIM bundles solve this.
  • You want zero setup: Fi requires no action when you land in a new country. An eSIM requires a 5-minute purchase and installation process before each trip.

Prepaid eSIM Wins

When a prepaid eSIM wins.

A prepaid eSIM beats Google Fi on cost in nearly every international travel scenario. The savings increase with trip length and data usage.

  • Trips longer than 5 days: the cost gap widens with each additional day. A 14-day trip with 10 GB of data costs $120 on Fi Flexible vs $25-$40 on a prepaid eSIM.
  • Data usage over 3 GB: Fi's $10/GB rate makes moderate data usage expensive. 5 GB costs $50 on Fi vs $12-$18 on a prepaid eSIM. The savings are 60-80%.
  • You travel 3+ times per year: the cumulative savings compound. Three international trips per year save $150-$400 compared to maintaining a Fi subscription.
  • You already have a cheap domestic plan: keeping a $15-$25/month domestic plan and adding prepaid eSIMs for travel costs less annually than Fi's $65/month Unlimited Plus plan.
  • You want unlimited data abroad: Holafly's unlimited plans cost $20-$47 per trip. Fi's unlimited international data requires the $65/month Plus plan year-round.

Migration

Switching from Google Fi to prepaid eSIMs.

If the cost comparison above convinced you, here is how to transition from Google Fi to a prepaid eSIM setup for travel.

  1. 1

Port your number to a cheaper domestic carrier

Transfer your phone number from Google Fi to a budget carrier like Mint Mobile ($15/month) or Visible ($25/month). This keeps your US number and reduces your base monthly cost.

  2. 2

Set up a Dual SIM configuration

Your domestic plan stays on one SIM line. Your travel eSIM activates on the second line when you travel. Both run simultaneously — you keep your number and get cheap local data abroad.

  3. 3

Buy travel eSIMs before each trip

Visit Airalo, Saily, or Nomad before your departure. Buy a plan for your destination. Install the QR code. Activate on landing. The process takes 5 minutes per trip.

FAQ

eSIM vs Google Fi questions.

Is Google Fi good for international travel?

Google Fi provides data in 200+ countries at $10/GB on the Flexible plan. For light users who travel occasionally, this is convenient. For frequent travelers or trips longer than a week, a prepaid eSIM costs 50-80% less. Fi's strength is convenience — no plan changes needed when you cross borders.

Does Google Fi throttle data internationally?

Google Fi's Flexible plan provides full-speed data internationally. The Simply Unlimited plan caps international data at 2G speeds (128 kbps), which is too slow for maps or messaging. The Unlimited Plus plan includes full-speed international data up to your plan's high-speed cap, then throttles to 256 kbps.

Can I use Google Fi and a travel eSIM at the same time?

Yes, on a Dual SIM phone. Keep Google Fi active for your US phone number and incoming calls. Set the travel eSIM as the primary data line for fast, cheap local data. Switch data lines in Settings. Both profiles work simultaneously.

How much does Google Fi cost per month internationally?

Google Fi Flexible costs $20/month base + $10/GB of data used internationally. A 5 GB international trip adds $50 to your bill, totaling $70. Google Fi Unlimited Plus costs $65/month and includes international data at full speed up to your plan cap. Both are more expensive than a prepaid eSIM for the same data amount.

Should I cancel Google Fi and switch to prepaid eSIMs?

If you travel more than 3 weeks per year internationally, switching to a cheaper domestic plan plus prepaid eSIMs for travel saves $200-$500 annually. If you travel once a year for a week, keeping Fi for its convenience may be worth the premium. The math depends on your travel frequency.
