Configuration

APN and network setup in Singapore

Automatic APN configuration

Most eSIM profiles auto-configure APN settings for Singtel's network. After installation, verify the APN is set correctly:

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Cellular Data Network
  • Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > (travel eSIM) > Access Point Names

A correctly configured APN shows the carrier name and data type. If the APN field is blank, your phone will attempt to auto-fill on first connection.

Manual APN entry

If auto-configuration fails (rare, typically older Android devices), enter APN settings manually. Check your provider's confirmation email for the exact values. Common fields:

APN configuration fields
FieldValue
APN NameFrom provider email
APNProvider-specific value
AuthenticationNone (most providers)
APN ProtocolIPv4/IPv6

Provider-specific APN values override Singtel's carrier defaults. Always use the values from your provider, not generic carrier APNs.

5G and LTE band selection

5G is available in Singapore (widespread coverage). To force a network type:

  • iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > 5G Auto / LTE
  • Android: Settings > Network > Preferred network type > 5G/LTE/3G Auto

Switch to LTE-only to conserve battery in rural areas without 5G towers. Nationwide 5G standalone coverage achieved in 2025; all carriers offer 5G

Verification

Verifying your Singapore data connection

Signal and network verification

Check your status bar: the carrier name should show Singtelor a roaming indicator. Signal bars confirm connection strength. Go to Settings > Cellular to verify data usage is counting on the travel eSIM line.

  • "Singtel" or roaming icon: Connected and working
  • "Searching...": Still connecting, wait 2-3 minutes
  • "No Service": Data roaming is off or wrong SIM line selected

Speed test

Run fast.com or Speedtest.net to verify your connection speed. Expected speeds on Singtel: approximately 355 Mbps download. Speeds vary by location: airports and city centers are fastest, rural areas slower.

Verifying data roaming is active

Go to Settings > Cellular > (travel eSIM) > Data Roaming: ON. Test by opening any website in your browser. If it loads, roaming is active. If not, toggle data roaming off and back on, then restart your phone.

Dual-SIM verification

Confirm your home SIM still receives calls and texts. Confirm the travel eSIM handles all data traffic. Test: send yourself a text message to your home number. Then load a webpage. Both should work simultaneously. If data routes through the home SIM instead, switch your cellular data line to the travel eSIM.

Airport Guide

Arriving at Changi (SIN) with your eSIM

Before boarding

Purchase and install your Singapore eSIM 24-48 hours before departure. Plans start at $5.49 for 1GB. Scan the QR code on a stable WiFi connection at home. After installation, keep the profile disabled until you are on the ground in Singapore. Singtel begins the plan timer on first registration, so toggling it on during a layover burns a day you paid for.

During the flight

While airborne, review your cellular settings. The Singapore eSIM should appear as a separate line under Settings. Assign it as data-only. Leave your home number active for incoming texts — two-factor authentication codes from your bank still arrive over SMS.

After landing

Turn off airplane mode as the plane reaches the gate. Your phone searches for Singtel's 5G/LTE network and registers within 30-45 seconds. The carrier name appears in your status bar. Open your browser and load a page to confirm data is flowing. The SIM counter from Singtel and StarHub is in the arrivals hall — expect a 5-10 min; Changi has multiple options across terminals wait and $12-30 for 100GB / 7-28 days for a tourist plan. Walk past it.

Leaving the airport

With data active, pull up your hotel address in Maps before you reach the taxi stand. Compare ride-share prices while walking through arrivals. Other passengers are still at the SIM counter while you are in a car. Singapore's emergency number is 999/995 — it works without data, but having your eSIM active means you can also share GPS coordinates with emergency services.

Device Setup

Device-specific instructions for Singapore

iPhone (iOS 17+)

  1. Open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Use QR Code.
  2. Point the camera at the QR code from your provider's email. The profile downloads in 5-15 seconds on stable WiFi.
  3. Tap "Add Cellular Plan" when prompted. Label the plan "Singapore Data" to distinguish it from your home line.
  4. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and select the Singapore eSIM as your active data line.
  5. Turn on Data Roaming for the Singapore line only: Settings > Cellular > [Singapore Data] > Data Roaming > On.
  6. After landing at Changi (SIN), toggle the eSIM on. Singtel registers your profile in 60-90 seconds. APN settings auto-configure for most Singapore eSIM plans on Singtel's network.
  7. Verify: open Safari and load any webpage. If the page renders, your Singapore data is active at 355 Mbps average.

Carrier confirmation: Your status bar should display "Singtel" or "StarHub" with 5G/LTE signal within 60-90 seconds. On iPhone, check Settings > Cellular — the Singapore line shows "Singtel" under Network. If you see "5G" in the status bar, your phone has connected to Singtel's 5G band.

Note: If the carrier field shows "No Service" after 2 minutes, go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection, turn off Automatic, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on. If Singtel does not appear in the list, restart your iPhone (hold Side + Volume Down for 3 seconds, slide to power off, wait 30 seconds, power on).

Samsung Galaxy (One UI 6+)

  1. Open Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM.
  2. Select "Scan QR Code" and frame the QR code from your provider's email. The download completes in 5-15 seconds.
  3. Tap "Add" when the carrier profile loads. Label it "Singapore Data" under SIM Manager for clarity.
  4. Set the Singapore eSIM as your mobile data SIM: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Mobile Data > select Singapore eSIM.
  5. Enable Data Roaming: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Data Roaming > On (for the travel SIM only).
  6. After landing at Changi (SIN), enable the eSIM. Singtel's 5G/LTE network registers within 60-90 seconds. APN settings load automatically for most Singapore eSIM plans on Singtel's network.
  7. Verify: open Chrome and load any page. Data flowing confirms your Singapore eSIM is active.

Carrier confirmation: Your status bar should display "Singtel" or "StarHub" with 5G/LTE signal within 60-90 seconds. On Samsung, check Settings > Connections > SIM Manager — the travel SIM shows "Singtel" as the connected network. A "5G" icon in the status bar confirms Singtel's 5G connection.

Note: If "No Service" persists after 2 minutes, go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators, switch from Automatic to Manual, wait for the scan to complete, then select Singtel. If the carrier does not appear, restart the device: hold Power + Volume Down until the restart menu appears.

Google Pixel (Android 14+)

  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Download SIM.
  2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider's email. The profile downloads in under 15 seconds.
  3. Confirm the download and label the SIM "Singapore Data" for identification.
  4. Set as mobile data SIM: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Singapore Data > Use for mobile data.
  5. Enable roaming: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Singapore Data > Roaming > On.
  6. After landing at Changi (SIN), enable the profile. Singtel connects within 60-90 seconds. APN settings self-configure on Pixel devices for most Singapore plans.
  7. Open Chrome and load any page to verify data connectivity on Singtel's 5G/LTE network.

Carrier confirmation: Your status bar should display "Singtel" or "StarHub" with 5G/LTE signal within 60-90 seconds. On Pixel, check Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs — the travel SIM displays "Singtel" as the active network.

Note: If the signal does not register within 2 minutes, go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Singapore Data > Advanced > Choose network, switch to Manual, let the scan run, and select Singtel. If it fails, reset network settings under Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Mobile, WiFi & Bluetooth.

Carrier Config

Carrier troubleshooting for Singapore

Singtel

Network selection: Open Settings > Cellular > Network Selection (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators (Samsung). Turn off Automatic. Wait 10-30 seconds for the carrier list to populate. Select "Singtel" from the list. The phone locks onto Singtel's 5G/LTE band and data resumes within 30 seconds.

Expected speed: 320-355 Mbps in urban areas, 107-178 Mbps in rural coverage

Common issue: Singtel's network occasionally delays eSIM profile registration during peak hours at major airports. If your phone shows "Searching..." for more than 2 minutes, turn off Automatic network selection, wait 10 seconds, then select Singtel manually from the operator list.

Resolution: Restart your phone after adjusting network settings. Singtel typically completes registration within 60-90 seconds of a fresh boot. If the issue persists, remove and re-add the eSIM profile using the manual activation code from your provider's confirmation email.

StarHub

Network selection: Open Settings > Cellular > Network Selection (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators (Samsung). Turn off Automatic. Wait 10-30 seconds for the carrier list to populate. Select "StarHub" from the list. The phone locks onto StarHub's 5G/LTE band and data resumes within 30 seconds.

Expected speed: 213-302 Mbps in cities, 71-142 Mbps outside metro areas

Common issue: Some eSIM plans routed through StarHub require data roaming to be enabled on the travel SIM line specifically. Leaving it off is the most common reason travelers report zero signal after landing in Singapore. Check under Settings > Cellular > [Travel eSIM] > Data Roaming.

Resolution: Toggle airplane mode on for 15 seconds, then off. This forces a fresh network scan without a full restart. StarHub should appear in your carrier field within 60 seconds. If it does not, use manual network selection to find and choose StarHub directly.

M1

Network selection: Open Settings > Cellular > Network Selection (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Operators (Samsung). Turn off Automatic. Wait 10-30 seconds for the carrier list to populate. Select "M1" from the list. The phone locks onto M1's 5G/LTE band and data resumes within 30 seconds.

Expected speed: 213-302 Mbps in cities, 71-142 Mbps outside metro areas

Common issue: M1 may show a signal bar but no data if the APN was not auto-configured. This happens on roughly 10-15% of Singapore eSIM activations. Contact your eSIM provider for the correct APN string.

Resolution: Reset network settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset Network Settings (iPhone) or Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings (Samsung). This clears saved WiFi passwords but resolves most M1 registration failures. Re-enable the Singapore eSIM after the reset completes.

Dual SIM

Dual SIM setup for Singapore: keep your number, use local data

Data line setup

Set the Singapore eSIM as your cellular data line: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > select the travel eSIM. All web traffic, maps, and app data route through Singtel's 5G/LTE network at $5.49 for 1GB. Your home carrier never touches data traffic, so no roaming charges accumulate.

Calls and SMS

Your home SIM handles calls and texts on your existing number. No one calling you sees a difference. SMS-based verification codes for banking apps and login services arrive on the home SIM as usual. Data-based messaging apps (WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram) use the Singapore eSIM's data connection through Singtel.

Emergency dialing

Singapore's emergency number is 999/995. This call connects through any network, regardless of which SIM is active or whether you have data. Your eSIM gives you the additional ability to use GPS mapping to find the nearest hospital and to share coordinates with emergency responders via text or messaging apps.

Battery impact

Two active SIMs cost roughly 10-15% more battery. The phone runs separate baseband connections for each line. On days with heavy use, turn off the home SIM under Settings and leave only the Singapore eSIM active. Your home number goes to voicemail until you re-enable it. Singapore outlets are Type G — bring an adapter and a portable charger.

Hotspot

Tethering and hotspot with your Singapore eSIM

Most eSIM plans for Singapore support personal hotspot out of the box. Enable it under Settings > Personal Hotspot (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > Mobile Hotspot (Samsung). Your laptop, tablet, or travel companion's phone connects through your Singapore eSIM on Singtel's 5G/LTE network. Hotspot throughput typically reaches 213-284 Mbps typical through hotspot. Video calls over hotspot use 300-500 MB per hour. A 1GB plan supports 6-10 hours of video calling before running low.

Provider restrictions

Not every plan includes hotspot. Holafly's unlimited eSIM plans for Singapore restrict tethering to prevent network abuse. Airalo and Nomad include hotspot on their fixed-data plans. If the Personal Hotspot toggle is missing from Settings, the plan blocks it at the carrier level — no workaround exists without switching to a hotspot-enabled plan.

Data impact

Hotspot data consumption is higher than direct phone use: laptops pull desktop-resolution assets. Budget 150-200 MB/hour for browsing, 300-500 MB/hour for video calls, 1.5-3 GB/hour for streaming. Turn off cloud sync, OS updates, and auto-downloads on connected devices to protect your Singapore data allowance.

Registration

Skip Singapore's SIM registration with eSIM

Buying a physical SIM in Singapore requires Passport required for prepaid SIM purchase. At Changi (SIN), the registration process at Singtel's counter takes 15-30 minutes: passport scan, photo capture, form completion. Some carriers require biometric verification (fingerprint or face scan). An eSIM purchased online before departure skips this entire process. No documents, no counter, no registration delay.

Peak Season

Singapore peak season: Dec-Jan, Jun-Aug network advisory

Singapore's Year-round destination. During Dec-Jan, Jun-Aug, Singtel's network handles significantly more traffic in tourist areas. Expect 142-213 Mbps during peak congestion in popular districts — still fast enough for maps, messaging, and ride-share apps. Video streaming at peak hours may buffer. Pre-download maps and entertainment before leaving WiFi. Upgrade to a higher data tier (1GB minimum) if traveling during peak months — congestion increases per-MB consumption due to retransmissions.

5G

Connect to Singapore's 5G network via eSIM

Singtel offers widespread 5G coverage across major cities and airports in Singapore. Nationwide 5G standalone coverage achieved in 2025. Enable 5G on your eSIM: iPhone — Settings > Cellular > Voice & Data > 5G Auto. Samsung — Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Network Mode > select 5G. Your phone needs 5G hardware (iPhone 12+, Galaxy S21+, Pixel 5+). Expected speeds on 5G: 355 Mbps in urban areas. "5G Auto" on iPhone conserves battery by falling back to LTE when 5G speed is not needed.

WiFi Backup

WiFi and eSIM activation in Singapore

Singapore has excellent public WiFi (fast and widely available). Wireless@SG provides free public WiFi island-wide. The best approach: install your eSIM at home over your own WiFi before departure. The QR code scan transfers about 500 KB of profile data — it needs a clean connection, not speed. Airport WiFi at Changi (SIN) uses captive portals that can interrupt the eSIM download. Install at home, travel with confidence.

Activating without WiFi

If you cannot scan the QR code, use manual entry. Your eSIM provider's confirmation email contains an SM-DP+ activation address and activation code. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM > Enter Details Manually. On Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM Manager > Add eSIM > Enter Activation Code. Enter the SM-DP+ address and code exactly as shown. This method uses your existing data connection (home carrier or WiFi) and does not require a camera.

Multi-Country

Singapore eSIM on a multi-country trip

If Singapore is one stop on a multi-stop Asian itinerary, install all country eSIMs before departure. Most phones store 8 or more eSIM profiles. Label each one clearly: "Singapore Data," "France Data," etc. At each border, disable the previous country's eSIM and enable the next one. The switch takes 30 seconds under Settings > Cellular. A single-country Singapore plan on Singtel's 5G/LTE network delivers better local coverage than a multi-country regional eSIM — starting at $5.49 for 1GB.

Switching eSIM profiles between countries

At the Singapore border, open Settings > Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Samsung). Disable your previous eSIM. Enable the Singapore profile and set it as the active data line. Turn on data roaming for the Singapore line. Singtel's 5G/LTE network connects within 60-90 seconds. Do not delete the previous eSIM — you may need it on the return leg.

Fixes

What to do when setup fails

"eSIM Not Supported" error

Cause: Your phone is carrier-locked or the model does not support eSIM.

Fix: Contact your home carrier to unlock (24-72 hours). Verify your model supports eSIM at our compatibility list.

"Unable to Activate eSIM" error

Cause: eSIM profile slot is full, or the QR code was already redeemed.

Fix:Delete unused eSIM profiles in Settings > Cellular. iPhones hold 8 profiles (2 active). If the QR shows as used, contact your provider for a replacement code.

Connected but no data

Cause: Data roaming is off on the travel eSIM, or data is routing through the home SIM.

Fix:Settings > Cellular > select travel eSIM > Data Roaming ON. Also verify: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > select the travel eSIM as your data line. Restart your phone after making changes.

Slow speeds on Singtel

Expected: 355 Mbps. If speeds are noticeably lower: toggle airplane mode on and off. Move to a different area. Try forcing LTE if 5G is congested. During Dec-Jan/Jun-Aug speeds may drop in tourist areas.

Provider-specific installation issues

  • Airalo: QR code in email and in-app. Re-download available in the app under "My eSIMs"
