Compatibility

Smartwatches that support eSIM in 2026.

Smartwatch eSIM support is limited to Cellular or LTE model variants. GPS-only and Bluetooth-only models have no cellular modem. Check your watch settings for a Cellular or Mobile Networks section to confirm before purchasing a carrier plan.

Garmin is a special case. The Venu 3 LTE uses Garmin's own satellite and cellular infrastructure for safety messaging and SOS only. It does not support carrier voice plans or standard eSIM profiles. It is not comparable to Apple or Samsung cellular watches for general connectivity.

Key Difference

How smartwatch eSIM differs from phone eSIM.

Phone eSIM

  • Choose any provider: Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad
  • Scan QR code or enter activation code
  • Independent data in 200+ countries
  • No carrier lock — switch providers per trip
  • $5 to $15 for a full trip

Smartwatch eSIM

  • Carrier provisions the plan (AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon)
  • Shares your iPhone's phone number
  • $10/month recurring charge
  • Works only in home carrier coverage area
  • Cannot accept third-party travel eSIM profiles

The core difference: phone eSIM is provider-agnostic and works internationally. Smartwatch eSIM is carrier-locked and domestic-focused. Travelers who buy a cellular Apple Watch expecting the same flexibility as a phone eSIM will be disappointed. The watch plan is a domestic convenience tool.

Samsung

Samsung Galaxy Watch eSIM for travel.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 through 7 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra all support eSIM via carrier number sharing. The setup path on Samsung is Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > SIM Manager. Galaxy Watch uses Wear OS with Samsung's One UI Watch layer on top.

Samsung has a marginal advantage over Apple Watch for international use: some carriers offer limited international data roaming on Galaxy Watch plans. This is carrier-dependent and not guaranteed. T-Mobile, for example, includes some international data in certain Galaxy Watch plans. Verizon and AT&T Galaxy Watch plans remain domestic-only.

An important limitation: no Samsung Galaxy Watch supports 5G. All current models use LTE only. Battery life in standalone cellular mode drops 30 to 40% compared to Bluetooth-only mode. For a full travel day, this is a meaningful drain.

The travel recommendation is the same as Apple Watch. Install a travel eSIM on your paired Android phone. The watch connects via Bluetooth. All watch features work through the phone relay without consuming the watch's battery on cellular search.

Google

Google Pixel Watch eSIM for travel.

Pixel Watch 1, 2, and 3 LTE models support eSIM via carrier number sharing. The setup path on Pixel Watch is Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > Add carrier plan. The watch pairs with a Pixel phone or any Android phone running Google services.

Google Fi users have one advantage. Pixel Watch with Google Fi includes some international data functionality in select countries. This is limited and varies by destination. For most international trips, even with Google Fi, the watch reverts to Bluetooth-only mode.

Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T Pixel Watch plans are domestic-only. No international standalone connectivity. The same solution applies: install a phone eSIM for destination data and let the watch work via Bluetooth.

The Fix

Why your phone eSIM is the real travel solution.

Every major smartwatch brand has the same limitation: the watch eSIM cannot accept third-party travel eSIM profiles. Airalo, Holafly, Saily, and Nomad QR codes are for phones, tablets, and cellular laptops only. No watch manufacturer allows open eSIM provisioning.

The phone eSIM bypasses this entirely. Install a prepaid travel eSIM on your phone before departure. The phone connects to the local LTE or 5G network. The watch connects to your phone via Bluetooth within its normal 30-foot range. Data flows: phone eSIM > Bluetooth > watch.

Cost comparison: $10 per month for a domestic-only watch plan versus $5 to $15 total for a phone eSIM that covers an entire international trip and gives the watch connectivity at the same time. The phone eSIM is the better investment for any trip crossing a border.

Just as you skip the airport SIM counter by installing a phone eSIM before departure, you skip the watch connectivity problem by having the phone connected. The watch gets everything for free through the Bluetooth relay.

Notification relay

All app notifications mirror to the watch via Bluetooth

Call forwarding

Incoming calls ring on both phone and watch within Bluetooth range

Battery saving

Bluetooth mode uses 30–40% less battery than standalone cellular

Battery Management

Smartwatch battery tips for travel.

Disable cellular on your smartwatch before any international trip. When the watch cannot find a familiar carrier network, it searches continuously. This drains the battery 3 to 5 times faster than normal. Enabling Bluetooth-only mode stops the search and extends battery by 30 to 40%.

The setting path: Apple Watch, open the Watch app on iPhone > Cellular > toggle off. Samsung Galaxy Watch: Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > toggle off. Pixel Watch: Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > toggle off.

For long travel days (airport connections, long-haul flights, full sightseeing days), enable Power Saving mode. This disables cellular and heart rate monitoring but can extend battery to 36 to 72 hours depending on the model. Enable it when you do not need precise health tracking.

Travel battery checklist

  • Disable cellular before departure (prevents carrier search drain)
  • Enable Bluetooth-only mode (30–40% battery saving)
  • Pack the watch-specific charging cable (not USB-C on older Apple Watch)
  • Enable power saving mode for 12+ hour travel days
  • Charge fully at each hotel before daily activities

FAQ

Smartwatch eSIM questions answered.

Can I use my smartwatch eSIM abroad?

Most smartwatch eSIM plans (Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, Pixel Watch) only work in your home country. They use carrier number-sharing plans that do not roam internationally. For travel, install a prepaid eSIM on your paired phone. The watch connects to the phone via Bluetooth and works normally within 30 feet.

Which smartwatches support eSIM?

Apple Watch Series 3+ (Cellular models), Samsung Galaxy Watch 4–7 LTE and Watch Ultra, Google Pixel Watch 1–3 LTE, and Garmin Venu 3 LTE (safety messaging only). GPS-only models do not have eSIM. Check your watch settings for a Cellular or Mobile Network option to confirm.

Is a cellular smartwatch worth it for travel?

Not for international travel. Watch cellular plans are domestic-only. However, a cellular watch is useful for domestic activities where you leave your phone behind — running, swimming, gym. For international trips, the phone's travel eSIM provides connectivity to the watch via Bluetooth at no extra cost.

How much data does a smartwatch use per day?

A smartwatch in standalone cellular mode uses 50–150 MB per day for notifications, weather, basic messaging, and health data sync. In Bluetooth mode (connected to phone), data goes through the phone's plan and the watch uses negligible additional data on its own.

Does Samsung Galaxy Watch eSIM work better abroad than Apple Watch?

Marginally. Some Samsung Galaxy Watch plans on select carriers offer limited international data roaming, while Apple Watch carrier plans are strictly domestic in the US. However, neither is reliable for standalone international connectivity. Both benefit from the paired phone having a travel eSIM.
